The New Adobe Creative Suite 3

Adobe recently launched their new line of creative products, Creative Suite 3. After buying Macromedia, Adobe took control of the Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks lines of products as well. A lot of us were wondering what this meant for the future of our creative programs. Would the prices increase? Would they do away with certain software or combine some of the programs into one?
Now we have our answer.
Adobe held on to the major Macromedia programs such as Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and Flash, and launched those new versions along with the new Adobe creative software. Each program by itself can run between $300 – $700 but Adobe now offers collections that include specific software titles that can possibly save the buyer a lot of money if they need all or most of the programs in the collection.
For example, the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium collection includes Adobe Bridge CS3, Adobe Version Cue CS3, Adobe Device Central CS3, Adobe Stock Photos, Adobe Acrobat Connect, Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, Adobe Flash CS3 Professional, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended, Adobe Illustrator CS3, Adobe Fireworks CS3, Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional, and Adobe Contribute CS3. This package is selling for $1599.00 (US Dollars). If you calculate what kind of a deal this is, you will realize that most of the major programs that would usually sell between $300 – $700 by themselves are $200 or less when purchased with this package. That’s big savings if you need all or most of those programs. So although the pricing may seem a little overwhelming at first, when you break it down, you can see just how much you are saving when you purchase a collection.
I think Adobe is on the right track to maintaining valuable software for the design industry, although it makes me a little uncomfortable to think that one company has so much power over the design community. Let’s hope they stay nice and don’t let that monopoly game get the best of them.
