Link Bait. Link Juice. Linkerati. Is this part of today’s marketing speak or just plain crazy talk?

by in Media on Dec 01, 2009

Today I learned about Link Bait.  Right after Link Juice and Linkerati. Say wha?

The marketing world I came from used terms such as white space, visual hierarchy, rough cut and VO. My how things have changed.

If you know what Link Bait is then you probably know something about search engine optimization (SEO), and how well Link Bait can attract strong consumer attention and drive up rankings on your website.  We see things like this all the time.  Remember that website link someone recently shared with you that included the 10 fattest cats in the world?  Or perhaps you came across an inspirational video hosted on a website that warranted passing along to your friends and family. Link Bait - content created for the purpose of attracting others (think fishing) so they in turn share this content with the masses resulting in a higher traffic boost, specifically a kick in your Google rankings.

Link Juice is the amount of strength your webpage has for achieving high rankings in your main keywords on Google.

Linkerati is the swarm of people in the world’s blogosphere that constantly publish content and do it often by linking to other pieces of relevant content.

Much more detailed explanations of these can be found at SEOmoz.

If you’ve never heard of these terms and think they sound more like dialogue in a spy movie or small talk in the local bait shop instead of a marketing text book, don’t you fret.  This stuff is new and we’re all learning to speak the lingo. I suggest finding a local SEO expert and treat him or her to coffee.  Have them educate you on the basics of search engine optimization. Why? Search may not be sexy but it’s what people are doing online everyday.  Clients are spending more and more money in this area for a reason - it works and they see results.

We all want to make our clients happy and help them successfully achieve their online marketing goals. By getting schooled in SEO, you will have the opportunity to sound even more like a digital marketing ninja when you can look them in the eye and say, “We need to work on improving your Link Juice so you are more appealing to the Linkerati”. James Bondline Marketing anyone?
